Towards the end of a mix when the decisions are starting to become small global tweaks, it helps to start tidying up the appearance of your edit window to help your future-self (or the next engineer) when you have to return to it at a later date.
This process includes:
methodical file, track and region names
instrument-by-instrument track ordering
nipping&tucking all audio regions with fades
joining midi regions on the same track
revealing all hidden tracks (and deleting any that have no relevance)
opening up all automation lanes to show your workings
Redundant nodes on the Automation lanes can give your mix a messy demeanour. To delete them you can simply double-click on each, but if there are dozens I find the ‘Click&Drag to Shade&Delete’ method useful.
Position the mouse to one side of a group
left-click and hold and drag sideways over the cluster of nodes
then use the other hand to push the delete key.
