MUSIC PRODUCTION 18: Tidy Up

Towards the end of a mix when the decisions are starting to become small global tweaks, it helps to start tidying up the appearance of your edit window to help your future-self (or the next engineer) when you have to return to it at a later date.

This process includes:

  • methodical file, track and region names

  • instrument-by-instrument track ordering

  • nipping&tucking all audio regions with fades

  • joining midi regions on the same track

  • revealing all hidden tracks (and deleting any that have no relevance)

  • opening up all automation lanes to show your workings

Redundant nodes on the Automation lanes can give your mix a messy demeanour. To delete them you can simply double-click on each, but if there are dozens I find the ‘Click&Drag to Shade&Delete’ method useful.

  1. Position the mouse to one side of a group

  2. left-click and hold and drag sideways over the cluster of nodes

  3. then use the other hand to push the delete key.
