COOL PARTS 24: Angus - Thunderstruck

Here is one of many classics by Angus.

Its done on one string, the 2B.

He is using the B Mixolydian mode = B C# D E F# G# A in the key of E.

Here are the frets of the tune:

I am not in my studio so have done it unplugged to save my neighbours.

Start slowly and build up gradually.

The pick alternates throughout and starts on an upstroke so that all the melody notes fall on a downstroke. You can flip this if you prefer.

Use the same fingers every time so that this part become automatic and you can focus on the dynamics.

The challenge comes when you speed up because one stray pick or lazy finger and its hard to recover. Zooming in on the action reveals further pitfalls as the pick angle or grip on it will definitely change over such a long part and this means the consistency of the dynamics and clarity are in a state of jeopardy.

Make sure you are muting the E, A, D and G strings with your picking hand so they don’t start to resonate along with all the activity. This is particularly important on a high gain setting.

Angus makes it look and sound easy. The video shows him using one hand throughout but the recording sounds like it was picked, either way you should work on both.
