MUSIC PRODUCTION 12: Copying Automation in Logic

When you have a section repeating in a track, and have spent some time automating the levels of the phrases in the first instance of the part, try using this method to save mixing time by copying the conducting across, where it is likely to be close enough with a only a few minor adjustments required to make it fit.

In this case my first impression of the guitar part’s performance and dynamics were fine, but then as the mix started to evolve, I noticed a few of the accents started to distract from the vocal.

Instead of replaying the part, a few tweaks with the volume automation did the trick on the offending transients.

Start by zooming in and inserting an automation node at the start of the section of automation to be copied.

Then zoom out, and click & drag the mouse over the section to copy until it goes white and keep your finger down on that mouse click.

Now press & hold ALT and move the mouse - the conducting will magically move along ready to work on the repeating part. Place the first node on the transient of the first note at the start of the repeating part and you are good to go.

Listen back and zoom in to tweak if it doesn’t quite fit.
