NOTATION 32: Where & why?
Earlier today I was reading this bar of Bach and caught myself visualising it on the guitar and moving it around the board with different fingering options.
These considerations are essential because the same notes feel and sound different as you reposition them.
This snippet is in Dm = D E F G A Bb C and in 6/8 time (count 1 2 3 4a 5a 6a)
This phrase can be played in many ways so I have chosen four approaches starting in open position followed by different positions further up the neck.
They all have a different timbre and different fingerings to observe.
If the timbre was not important then your choice from a strictly technical perspective would depend on what came before and what is to come.
