CHORDS 72: Shorter's ESP - Build & Play workout

This is a revised and updated version of an earlier lesson.

The chart below was taken from the Jazz Standard Real Book. It is a sketch of the Wayne Shorter 1965 classic.

The exercise here is to grab an interesting progression, build the shapes, practise the changes and then begin to really appreciate the craft.

Here is the chart:

Here are the chords and notes. Use these and your fretboard diagram to build a new shape for each. You can of course use mine below and take the fingerings from the video.

  • E 7 #5 #9 = E G# C D G

  • F maj 7 = F A C E

  • Eb maj 7 #11 = Eb G Bb D A

  • D 7 #9 = D F# A C F

  • E 7 #9 = E G# B D G

  • Eb maj 7 = Eb G Bb D

  • D m 7 = D F A C

  • G 7 = G B D F

  • Gm 7 = G Bb D F

  • Gb maj 7 #11 = Gb Bb Db F C

  • Db 7 #11 = Db F Ab B Gb

  • Gb 7 = Gb Bb Db F

  • F maj 7 = F A C E

Here are the note locations as per the the video:

ending 1

ending 2 plus coda

If you consider the progression from a perspective of keys then Wayne’s choices will seem bizarre, but if you listen to the track with its melody in-situ and imagine its a piece of abstract jazz art, then it may start to make sense.
